Presidential son Hunter Biden has sued Fox News for a mock trial series that centered on his misdeeds.
Mediaite reported that on June 30, the first son filed a lawsuit in New York City against the conservative network. He accused the network of targeting him “in an effort to harass, annoy, alarm and humiliate him, and tarnish his reputation.”
The lawsuit stemmed from a six-part “mock trial” series titled “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” which aired on the network’s video-on-demand service Fox Nation. The fictional program premiered in late October 2022 and was touted as providing viewers with “how a possible Hunter Biden trial might look.”
However, the program included nude images of the presidential son – ostensibly obtained from the infamous “laptop from hell.” Hunter’s lawsuit alleged that Fox News violated Section 52-b of the New York Civil Rights Law, which covers so-called “revenge porn” – spreading a person’s nude images without their consent to malign them.
“Far from reporting on a newsworthy event, Fox News sought to commercialize [Hunter] Biden’s personality through a form of treatment distinct from the dissemination of news or information,” the lawsuit stated. “Indeed, the entire miniseries is fictionalized and based on a nonexistent criminal case.”
The network pushed back against the complaint in a statement to Mediaite, calling it an “entirely politically motivated lawsuit” that is “devoid of merit.”
“Hunter Biden is a public figure who has been the subject of multiple investigations and is now a convicted felon. Consistent with the First Amendment, Fox News has accurately covered the newsworthy events of [Hunter’s] own making, and we look forward to vindicating our rights in court,” the statement continued. According to Fox News‘ statement, the presidential son did not complain about “The Trial of Hunter Biden” when it was first released and had been airing for more than a year. It was only after Hunter’s lawyers sent a letter in April that the network learned of his grievances. The program was removed from Fox Nation within days of the letter’s receipt out of “an abundance of caution.”
The letter sent by powerhouse celebrity law firm Geragos & Geragos ordered Fox News to remove the show, which was presided over by Judge Joe Brown of the eponymous reality TV program, from the streaming platform. The network complied and removed the show, alongside a promotional video.
“This program was produced in and has been available since 2022. We are reviewing the concerns that have just been raised and, out of an abundance of caution in the interim, have taken it down,” Fox News said in a statement at the time.
According to the April 2022 letter from Geragos & Geragos, the series used “intimate images of [Hunter] Biden depicting him in the nude, as well as engaged in sex acts. It further alleged that Fox News “knows that these private and confidential images were hacked, stolen and/or manipulated digital material.” The lawyers cited “revenge porn” laws and demanded the immediate removal of the series – with threats of legal action for noncompliance.
